Ken Vandermark’s first large ensemble recording in more than four years. The band is called Entr’acte and is a veritable “who’s who” of the most interesting and important musicians currently working in the field of experimental music: Dieb13, Elisabeth Harnik, Steve Heather, Terrie Hessels, Didi Kern, Mette Rasmussen, Jasper Stadhouders, Joe Williamson, and Nate Wooley.

Consequent Duos: Series 2F

Jaap Blonk & Lou Mallozzi with Ken Vandermark

The electro-acoustic possibilities found in the material between Mallozzi and Vandermark spill into the purely acoustic world investigated in Ken’s set with Blonk- Vandermark’s use of extended techniques for clarinets and saxophones were pushed to the fore throughout this concert. There’s no better way to conclude this series of duo recordings than with the conversational give and take presented between these artists.

Ken Vandermark & Christof Kurzmann

“Consequent Duos: series 2e//Christof Kurzmann & Ken Vandermark” (AGR/SvA-017) indicates a stunning musical interplay that’s been developed through years of concerts together. Though this sonic dialog is informed by their mutual performance history, there is no attempt to replicate their collaborative work in other bands. Often the music documented here doesn’t even sound as though it’s been created by a duo. Frequently it has the impact of a wide ranging series of concertos- with Vandermark’s contributions falling literally in the center of Kurzmann’s improvised and layered “orchestrations.”

This new recording reveals a completely different set of improvisational concerns and makes a remarkable counterweight to their first duo release, "Resistance," with a range of intensities and instrumentation between the two musicians that is remarkable.

Ikue Mori & Ken Vandermark

The music, though completely improvised, has a highly detailed, formal architecture that runs throughout its 38 minutes. The material unfolds with a true sense of surprise and risk, as it does on each occasion that Mori and Vandermark work together.

Joe Morris & Ken Vandermark

Morris’ impact on Vandermark’s creative path goes back to the mid-1980s, when he heard Joe perform in Boston on a regular basis with the Joe Morris Trio and his group Sweatshop. Those ensembles set a standard for musical exploration and excellence that Ken still seeks to achieve with his own ensembles today.

Recorded in August of 2011 at a concert at the Hungry Brain in Chicago, this document showcases these two frequent collaborators (Vandermark 5, Resonance Ensemble, Made To Break) working at the height of their musical abilities.
